Hw 5: Dominate Discourses

The Father of All Hens: KFC vs Popeye

Kentucky Fried Chicken, or better known as KFC, was founded in 1930 in North Corbin, Kentucky, when Colonel Harland Sanders started selling his fried chicken out of a gas station. As you can tell the buisness did extrodiary well, though our founded began ranting that: "They prostituted every goddamn thing I had." The second to third-largest American fried chicken chain, Popeyes, popped up in 1972 in Arabi, Louisiana and was founded by Al Copeland, who named the chain after Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle from the movie The French Connection.        As a student who attends SOF, at lunch time I see a lot of students go to and come back from Popeye's. I would ask why they choose to go there when there are other places to get chicken more closer to the school. "Because it tastes good" or "The other chicken is sh*t" are the most common responses. I was even told that " You serious? You can't deny me fried chicken. I'm black! You can't keep a black kid from his chicken!" Then I began to realize something, is the fight between KFC and Popeye's just a cover up for another fued between black and white people?
As people can tell from the commercials on television the most recent one who promotes Popeye's chicken is an average weight black women with a southern accent. Ones who promote KFC are usually white men, now demanding the new 'double down' chicken sandwich. I guess food is just another way to show ethnic inequality. Do you really ever see a white person at the register at a taco bell? Do the black people who actually do work at a fried chicken resturaunt really look happy and joyful?
The dominant discourse is the way people premote the chicken they sell compared to the way it is actually exchanged from those who stand behind the conter and those who order from it.
